Malaysia suffers double losses ahead of their match against Vietnam

The Malaysian national team continues to grapple with a challenging personnel problem before the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinal against Vietnam. Coach Tan Cheng Hoe has confirmed the absence of Wan Kuzain, a key creative midfielder in the lineup.

According to Astro Arena, Wan Kuzain has returned to the United States after completing the group stage. The 27-year-old midfielder, who plays for Sporting JAX, cannot continue with Malaysia because his club season is about to start. Sporting JAX will face Indy Eleven on August 16, exactly when Malaysia plays the first leg of the semifinal against Vietnam.

The ASEAN Cup is not part of FIFA's match calendar, so clubs are not obligated to release players. As a result, Wan Kuzain had to return to the US, ending a short but impactful run in the tournament. He played all four group-stage matches, scoring one goal and providing one assist. His decisive pass to Pavithran in the match against the Philippines was especially crucial, helping Malaysia secure a semifinal spot.

The absence of Wan Kuzain further weakens Malaysia's midfield. Earlier, Tan Cheng Hoe had already lost several key players to injuries, including Endrick dos Santos, Jimmy Raymond, and Engku Nur Yacob. More worryingly, both Endrick and Wan Kuzain played vital roles in organizing play—one controlled the tempo, the other created breakthroughs and connected the lines. With both sidelined, Malaysia not only lacks personnel but also loses two crucial links in their system.

Tan Cheng Hoe now faces a tough challenge. There are few quality replacement options left, while the semifinal opponent, Vietnam, has a more stable roster and greater depth. In this situation, Malaysia will likely prioritize safety. A tight defensive setup, compressing space for Vietnam, and waiting for counterattack opportunities may be Tan Cheng Hoe's most realistic choice.
